Interaction of carbohydrates with alcohol dehydrogenase: Effect on enzyme activity
Swati B. Jadhav, Sandip B. Bankar, Tom Granström, Heikki Ojamo, Rekha S. Singhal, Shrikant A. Survase

Highlights

・Oxidized glucose, starch and pectin inhibited alcohol dehydrogenase.
・Inhibition rate constant increased with an increase in concentration of carbohydrates.
・Thiol groups of enzyme were involved in binding with inhibitiors.
・Oxidized pectin was the most potent inhibitors among the carbohydrates studied.

Enhancement of immobilized lipase activity by design of polymer brushes on a hollow fiber membrane
Tadashi Okobira, Ai Matsuo, Hikaru Matsumoto, Takanori Tanaka, Kazuya Kai, Chie Minari, Muneharu Goto, Hidetaka Kawakita, Kazuya Uezu

Highlights

・We grafted a polymer brush possessing aminoethanol onto a hollow fiber membrane to immobilize lipase.
・The water molecules which AE retained played an important role for keeping activity of lipase.
・We controlled the length and density of the polymer brushes to evaluate the effects to activity of lipase.
・The improved polymer brushes achieved nineteen-fold higher esterification than that of before improvement.

Xiaoli Liu, Wenshui Xia, Qixing Jiang, Yanshun Xu, Peipei Yu

Highlights

・The modes of action of COS/KA on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were examined.
・COS/KA increased the membrane permeability by adhering to cell membranes.
・COS/KA resulted in leakage of cell inclusions (enzymes, DNA, proteins and ions).
・Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive than Gram-negative bacteria to COS/KA.
・COS/KA has potential in food industry and biomedical sciences.
