Isolation of potential probiotic Lactobacillus oris HMI68 from mother's milk with cholesterol-reducing property
Marimuthu Anandharaj, Balayogan Sivasankari

Highlights

  • 120 Strains from mother's milk were isolated and six potential strains were selected for further study.
  • All the six strains were survived in stimulated bile and acidic conditions.
  • Most of the Lactobacillus strains potentially prevent the growth of enteric pathogens and resistance to many antibiotics.
  • All the strains showed deconjugation with sodium glycocholate and sodium taurocholate.
  • Lactobacillus oris HMI68 reduced more amount of cholesterol compared with other strains.

In-package atmospheric pressure cold plasma treatment of cherry tomatoes
Nrusimha Nath Misra, Kevin M. Keener, Paula Bourke, Jean-Paul Mosnier, Patrick J. Cullen

Highlights

  • Cold plasma treatment of cherry tomatoes inside sealed packages.
  • Emission spectroscopy of the plasma source.
  • Effect on quality parameters – respiration rate, pH, firmness, and weight loss.
  • Cold plasma could serve as a promising alternative to conventional processing.

Biochemical Engineering

Biosynthesis of 1,3-propanediol from glycerol with Lactobacillus reuteri: Effect of operating variables
Jyotsna Jolly, Bernd Hitzmann, Subramanian Ramalingam, Kadathur B. Ramachandran

Highlights

  • Enhanced 1,3-PD production from glycerol by co-fermentation with glucose.
  • A final concentration of 65.3 g/l was obtained in repeated fed-batch fermentation.
  • It is the highest reported concentration of 1,3-PD for this strain.
  • The yield of 1,3-PD based on glycerol was close to the theoretical maximum value.
  • The study has given insight to further improve the co-fermentation process.

Junsong Chen, Jing Wang, Yunxia Zhang, Dengyu Chen, Cuiping Yang, Cai Kai, Xiaoying Wang, Fangfang Shi, Jun Dou

Highlights

  • We demonstrate the HO8910 CD44+CD117+cells posses EOC CSC characteristics.
  • Using 3D culture model could accurately display EOC CSC behavior in vitro.
  • CD44+CD117+CSCs exhibit high chemoresistant to 5Fu, cisplatin in 3D versus 2D culture.
  • EOC CSC high chemoresistance are associated with high expression of ABCG2 and MMP-2.
  • 3D model improves the efficacy of screening anticancer drugs for treatment of EOC CSCs.
